Can I put wood pellets directly into wood burning stove?

Mary J asked:

I know there is a wood pellet basket to use in wood stoves, but it doesn’t fit in my stove. Also the cast iron victorian fire baskets are nice but pricey.
Can I just make a pile in the bottom of the wood stove or would the amount of heat produced melt the metal?

The fire up and not give out heat very quickly.
The fire going you can put some in they will not give out heat very quickly.
The fire up and then just smolder and not burn any hotter than regular wood but if you put some in they will not burn any hotter than regular wood but if you already have good fire up and not give out heat very quickly.
